The history of the establishment of the Sports Coaching Education Undergraduate Study Program began in 1983 as an elective concentration in the Department of Sports Education, Faculty of Sports and Health Education. Furthermore, in 1996 based on the Decree of the Director-General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 245/DIKTI/Kep/1996 concerning Study Programs in the Undergraduate Program at the Yogyakarta Teacher Training and Education Institute decided that Sports Coaching Education was a study program. The extension of the operating permit for the Undergraduate Sports Coaching Education Study Program was granted by the Counselor of the Yogyakarta State University through the Rector's Decree No. 4247/D/T/K-N/2010. Since 2006, the PKO Undergraduate Study Program has received three "A" accreditations and one "Superior" Accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT).
